When we first wrote this article in 2023, GPT-5 was pure speculation. Three years on, a lot has happened — GPT-5 shipped, evolved through six point-releases, and has now been joined by an entirely new generation: GPT-6. This guide has been fully updated for October 2026 with what actually happened, what the current model lineup looks like, and what it means if you use ChatGPT for SEO, content or client work.

Quick answer

GPT-5 launched on 7 August 2025 — it is no longer a rumour. The current line-up is GPT-5.6 (default for Free and Go users) and the new GPT-6 family rolling out from October 2026: GPT-6 Sol for everyday tiers and GPT-6 Astra powering the Pro plans.

What GPT-5 actually delivered

The 2023 speculation mostly got the direction right but the shape wrong. GPT-5 wasn't a single bigger model — it was a unified system: a fast model for everyday questions, a "Thinking" model for hard problems, and a real-time router deciding which to use. Free users got reasoning for the first time, and OpenAI introduced "safe completions" — answering what it safely can instead of refusing outright.

What the 5.x line then added:

  • GPT-5.1 — personality. Warmer defaults, tone controls, and Instant that decides when to think before answering.
  • GPT-5.2 — professional work. Spreadsheets, presentations, long-running agents and a big jump on knowledge-work benchmarks; launched weeks after Gemini 3 Pro reportedly triggered an internal "code red" at OpenAI.
  • GPT-5.3/5.4 — coding meets reasoning. Codex-class software ability merged into the main model, plus an upfront thinking plan you can adjust mid-response.
  • GPT-5.6 — the quiet default. Luna now serves Free and Go users; Sol and Sol Pro handle complex work on paid plans.

The GPT-6 era has started

September 2026 opened the next generation. GPT-6 Astra is the flagship — state-of-the-art on computer and browser use, software engineering, cybersecurity and science, with a 1.05M-token context window and API pricing of $10/1M input and $50/1M output tokens. GPT-6 Sol and Luna bring the same generation down to everyday prices, and GPT-6.1 Sol lands near-Astra capability at a fifth of the API cost.

In ChatGPT itself, GPT-6 is rolling out globally with Intelligent UI — faster responses paired with visuals and interactive elements you can explore directly in the chat, replacing the old text-only answers for many tasks. GPT-6 Sol powers Instant through Extra High thinking levels; GPT-6 Pro (Astra-powered) sits on the $100 and $200 Pro tiers.

Practical availability: Free and Go users default to GPT-5.6 Luna. Plus ($20/mo) gets GPT-6 Sol across thinking levels plus Astra in Work and Codex. Pro ($100/$200), Business and Enterprise get GPT-6 Pro powered by Astra.

What this means for SEO and content work

The practical shifts for marketing teams:

  • Search behaviour is changing with the models. Intelligent UI and stronger browsing mean more questions get answered inside ChatGPT — which is exactly why how SEO has evolved now includes AI visibility alongside rankings.
  • Reasoning is the default, not the upgrade. Even free users now get routed thinking — content that wins citations needs to be genuinely authoritative, not just optimised.
  • Agents do the research. Long-running tasks (deep research, audits, document builds) are now native — the productivity gap between teams that use them and teams that don't is widening fast.
  • It is still not a specialist tool. ChatGPT won't pull live DR/DA metrics or find backlink prospects — for that layer, a specialist workspace like AskZyro or one of the other tools in our ChatGPT alternatives guide fills the gap.

If AI visibility is now part of your strategy, earning brand mentions and citations on real publications is what gets you surfaced in these answers — that part hasn't changed, it's just become the whole game.

Frequently asked questions

When did GPT-5 come out?

GPT-5 launched on 7 August 2025 as a unified system — a fast model for most questions plus GPT-5 Thinking for harder problems, routed automatically. It was the first time free ChatGPT users got access to a reasoning model.

What is the newest ChatGPT model in 2026?

GPT-6 is rolling out in ChatGPT from October 2026. GPT-6 Sol powers Instant through Extra High thinking levels, while GPT-6 Pro (powered by GPT-6 Astra, the flagship) is on the $100 and $200 Pro tiers. Free and Go users default to GPT-5.6 Luna.

What is GPT-6 Astra?

Astra is OpenAI's flagship model, announced 3 September 2026. It targets computer and browser use, coding, cybersecurity, science and professional work, with a 1.05M-token context window. In the API it costs $10 per 1M input tokens and $50 per 1M output tokens.

Is GPT-5 still available?

Yes. The GPT-5 line continues as GPT-5.6: Luna is the default for Free and Go plans, and Sol/Sol Pro remain selectable. GPT-6 arriving does not retire the selectable 5.x models, though older versions like GPT-5.1 were retired in March 2026.

How much does ChatGPT cost in 2026?

Free still exists, ChatGPT Go is $8/month, Plus is $20/month, and Pro tiers run $100 and $200/month for the highest-capability models. API pricing is per token and varies by model — GPT-6 Sol is roughly a fifth of Astra's price.

What is Intelligent UI in ChatGPT?

Rolling out globally with GPT-6 in October 2026, Intelligent UI delivers faster responses combined with visuals and interactive elements you can explore directly inside the chat — charts, cards and interactive outputs rather than plain text alone.
