What Makes a Good URL Slug?
The best URL slugs share five characteristics. These aren't just SEO opinions — they're backed by Google's official documentation and years of click-through rate data from SERPs.
Short and focused
Aim for 3–5 words and under 75 characters. Every extra word dilutes focus and adds unnecessary length. Cut everything that isn't the core keyword.
Keyword-first
Put your primary keyword at the start of the slug. /seo-tools-free is better than /free-tools-for-seo. Front-loading keywords makes them more prominent in SERP display and browser tabs.
Hyphens only
Google reads hyphens as word separators. Underscores join words. Spaces become %20. Always use hyphens — /on-page-seo not /on_page_seo and definitely not /on%20page%20seo.
Lowercase only
/SEO-Tools and /seo-tools are technically two different URLs on case-sensitive servers (Linux). Always lowercase to prevent duplicate content issues and canonicalisation headaches.
Descriptive and readable
A good URL tells users what the page is about before they click. /how-to-build-backlinks is clear; /p?id=4829 is not. Readable URLs get higher click-through rates from SERPs.
No stop words
The, a, an, of, for, in, with, and — these add characters with zero SEO value. /guide-to-building-backlinks → /building-backlinks. Shorter and no loss of meaning.
