In plain English

Semrush collects data about what people search for, which websites rank for those searches, and how much traffic and advertising spend goes into them. You type in a domain or keyword and get back a picture of what that site ranks for, who its competitors are, what ads they run, and what content is performing — all from publicly available and third-party data.

Technical definition

Semrush is a commercial SaaS platform that aggregates search engine result page data, keyword metrics, backlink data, and advertising data into a suite of tools. Its database is built from a combination of third-party data providers, its own crawling infrastructure, and clickstream data panels. Key tools include Domain Overview, Keyword Magic Tool, Position Tracking, Site Audit, Backlink Analytics, and Advertising Research. All traffic and keyword metrics are modelled estimates, not data sourced directly from the sites themselves.

Quick example

Enter a competitor's domain into Domain Overview, switch to the Organic Research report, and you see which keywords drive their estimated organic traffic — along with the pages that rank for each. Export that list, filter by intent and difficulty, and you have a content roadmap based on what is demonstrably working in your niche.

Still relevant?Yes. Semrush is one of the most widely used SEO platforms globally, particularly strong in PPC competitive intelligence and keyword research. Its traffic estimates should be treated as approximations.

Why Semrush matters

Semrush matters because it covers more of the digital marketing stack than most single tools. For teams that handle SEO, PPC and content under one roof, it reduces the number of subscriptions needed and provides a shared data vocabulary across disciplines.

It reveals competitor strategy across channels

Unlike pure SEO tools, Semrush shows both organic and paid search data for any domain. That means you can see not just what a competitor ranks for, but what they pay to advertise on — which is often a stronger signal of commercial intent than organic rankings alone.

Its keyword database is one of the largest available

The Keyword Magic Tool surfaces millions of keyword variations with volume, difficulty, intent and SERP features for each. For content planning at scale, this breadth is hard to match with free tools.

Site Audit catches technical issues systematically

The crawler checks for over 140 technical issues including broken links, missing meta data, structured data errors, and Core Web Vitals signals. For agencies managing multiple client sites, this provides a repeatable audit baseline.

Position Tracking includes SERP feature monitoring

Rank tracking in Semrush does not just track position — it tracks whether you appear in featured snippets, local packs, image packs, and other SERP features. This matters as organic results get displaced by AI Overviews and rich features.

It supports reporting and client communication

Semrush My Reports lets agencies generate branded PDF reports pulling from multiple tools. This reduces manual reporting time and gives clients a consistent format across campaigns.

How it works

Semrush aggregates data from multiple sources and presents it through a unified interface.

  1. 1

Data is collected from multiple sources

Semrush builds its database from third-party data providers, its own crawler, and clickstream data from browser extensions and panels. No data comes from Google directly — all figures are estimates or models.

  2. 2

    Keywords are indexed with attributes

Each keyword in the database carries search volume (estimated), Keyword Difficulty (KD), competitive density, SERP features present, and intent classification. These attributes are computed, not measured.

  3. 3

    Domain data is assembled

For any domain, Semrush estimates organic traffic, organic keywords, paid traffic, paid keywords, backlinks, and referring domains. These estimates are derived from its keyword and ranking database, not from the site's own analytics.

  4. 4

    Tools expose filtered views

Each tool — Keyword Magic, Domain Overview, Backlink Analytics, Site Audit — is a filtered and formatted view of the underlying data, designed for a specific workflow.

  5. 5

    Reports combine data across tools

My Reports and the SEMrush API let you pull data from multiple tools into a single view, which is how agencies build client-facing dashboards and automated reporting pipelines.

Types and variations

The platform is usually described by its main tools and features.

Domain Overview

A snapshot of any domain's estimated organic and paid traffic, top keywords, competitors, and backlink profile. The usual starting point for competitive research.

Keyword Magic Tool

The core keyword research tool. Enter a seed keyword and get thousands of variations with volume, difficulty, intent and SERP features. Supports filtering by match type, volume range, and difficulty.

Position Tracking

Daily rank tracking for target keywords across locations, devices, and search engines. Includes SERP feature tracking and competitor comparison.

Site Audit

A crawler that checks your site for over 140 technical SEO issues, including crawlability, HTTPS, performance, structured data, and internal linking problems.

Backlink Analytics

Backlink data including referring domains, anchor text distribution, link type breakdown, and new/lost links. Less comprehensive than Ahrefs for link research but integrated into the same platform.

Advertising Research

Shows which keywords a domain bids on in Google Ads, estimated ad spend, ad copy history, and landing pages. Unique to Semrush among major SEO platforms.

Content Marketing Toolkit

A set of tools for content planning, including SEO Content Template, SEO Writing Assistant, Topic Research, and Post Tracking. Designed to bridge keyword research and content production.

Semrush Trends

Traffic analytics estimates including visits, bounce rate, average visit duration, and traffic sources for any domain. Based on a combination of clickstream and modelling.

Real examples

A few concrete ways the platform gets used in practice.

Building a keyword strategy from competitor data

Run three competitors through Organic Research, export their top keywords, and find the gaps — keywords they rank for that you do not. Filter by intent and difficulty, and you have a prioritised content list backed by evidence that the terms are rankable in your niche.

Auditing a new client site

Run Site Audit on a new client domain before any strategy work. The crawl report surfaces broken links, redirect chains, missing canonicals, and indexation issues that would otherwise undermine content and link building work. Fixing these first is standard practice.

Reporting estimated traffic as actual traffic

Telling a client "your competitor gets 50,000 visits a month" based on the Semrush estimate. The estimate is a model derived from keyword rankings and clickstream data — it can be off by a factor of two or more, especially for sites with significant direct, referral, or branded traffic.

Chasing Keyword Difficulty scores without context

Filtering keywords to KD below 30 and writing content for every one of them. KD is a relative metric that does not account for your site's existing authority, the quality of the top-ranking pages, or whether the SERP is dominated by domains you cannot realistically outrank.

Best practices

Semrush is powerful but broad. These habits separate useful analysis from dashboard tourism.

What to do

  • Use Domain Overview as a starting point, not a conclusion — always drill into the underlying reports
  • Cross-reference Semrush traffic estimates against GA4 and Search Console for sites you own
  • Filter keyword lists by intent before prioritising content — informational keywords convert differently from transactional ones
  • Use the Position Tracking SERP feature report to monitor visibility beyond blue links
  • Set up automated Site Audit runs on a schedule rather than running one-off crawls
  • Use the Advertising Research tool to validate that competitors are spending real money on a keyword before targeting it organically

What to avoid

  • Reporting estimated traffic figures to clients as measured data
  • Treating Keyword Difficulty as a precise predictor of ranking effort
  • Comparing Semrush metrics directly with Ahrefs or Moz metrics — they use different methodologies
  • Ignoring the SERP features column when planning content — a featured snippet can capture the majority of clicks
  • Running Site Audit once and assuming the issues list is exhaustive — configure crawl limits and exclusions for large sites

Common mistakes

Confusing Semrush Authority Score with Google's view

Authority Score is Semrush's composite metric combining backlink data, organic traffic, and paid traffic. It is not used by Google and should be treated as a relative comparison tool, not an absolute quality measure.

Assuming the keyword database is complete

Semrush has a large keyword database, but it does not capture every long-tail variation, especially for low-volume or very new search terms. Use it for breadth, then validate with Search Console data for your own site.

Over-relying on the SEO Writing Assistant

The SEO Writing Assistant provides real-time recommendations based on top-ranking pages, but it cannot judge content quality, originality, or expertise. Use it as a checklist, not a replacement for editorial judgement.

Ignoring data freshness limits

Position Tracking updates daily, but Domain Overview and Organic Research data can be weeks old. Always check the data freshness date before making strategic decisions based on competitor data.

Not configuring Site Audit properly

Running a Site Audit with default settings on a large e-commerce site can miss issues buried deep in the architecture. Configure crawl limits, exclude parameter URLs, and set a proper user-agent to get meaningful results.

Comparing Semrush backlink data with Ahrefs

The two tools use different crawlers and indexes, so backlink counts and referring domain counts will always differ. Pick one tool for link reporting and stick with it for consistency.

How Semrush fits into the changing SEO tool landscape

Semrush has positioned itself as a full marketing platform rather than a pure SEO tool, which is both its strength and its vulnerability. As AI-powered search and zero-click results reduce the value of traditional rank tracking, the breadth of Semrush — covering PPC, content, social, and competitive intelligence — becomes more valuable. But the depth of any individual tool is often surpassed by specialist platforms: Ahrefs for backlinks, Screaming Frog for technical audits, Surfer for content optimisation. The question for most teams is whether the breadth justifies the subscription cost versus assembling a stack of specialist tools.

  • PPC competitive intelligence remains Semrush's most differentiated capability
  • AI Overviews are reducing click-through rates on informational queries, making SERP feature tracking more important than raw position
  • The content marketing toolkit bridges a gap that pure SEO tools do not address, but specialist content tools are catching up
  • API access makes Semrush viable for agencies building custom reporting pipelines
From our campaigns

How iNet Ventures approaches semrush

We use Semrush alongside Ahrefs for competitive research and client reporting. Semrush's PPC data is particularly useful for identifying keywords with genuine commercial intent — if a competitor is paying to advertise on a term, it is worth targeting organically. We do not rely on its traffic estimates as a primary metric.

Competitor research

We use Domain Overview and Organic Research to map competitor keyword strategies, then cross-reference with Ahrefs referring domain data to understand both the content and link dimensions of their approach.

Keyword qualification

Before recommending a content plan, we check the Advertising Research report to see if competitors are spending real money on the target keywords. Paid investment is a strong signal of commercial value.

Client reporting

We use Semrush My Reports for monthly client deliverables, combining Position Tracking, Site Audit, and Backlink Analytics data into a single branded report. We always label estimated figures as estimates.

Frequently asked questions

Is Semrush data accurate?

Semrush data is modelled, not measured. Keyword volumes, traffic estimates, and difficulty scores are approximations derived from clickstream data and SERP analysis. For sites you own, always cross-reference with Google Search Console and GA4. For competitor research, use Semrush figures as relative comparisons rather than absolute numbers.

How does Semrush compare to Ahrefs?

Semrush is broader, covering PPC, social, and content marketing alongside SEO. Ahrefs is deeper for backlink research, with a larger link index and more granular link metrics. Many agencies use both — Ahrefs for link work and Semrush for keyword and PPC research. If budget allows only one, the choice depends on whether PPC intelligence matters to your workflow.

Is there a free version of Semrush?

Semrush offers a free account with limited daily searches and restricted report access. It is enough for occasional lookups but not for serious campaign work. The free tier does not include Position Tracking, full Site Audit, or the Advertising Research reports that differentiate Semrush from competitors.

What is Semrush Authority Score?

Authority Score is a composite metric that combines backlink quantity and quality, organic search traffic, and paid search traffic into a single 0–100 score. It is Semrush's equivalent of Moz's Domain Authority or Ahrefs' Domain Rating. None of these metrics are used by Google — they are relative comparison tools for evaluating domains against each other.

Can Semrush replace Google Analytics?

No. Semrush estimates traffic for any domain based on keyword rankings and clickstream models. Google Analytics measures actual visitor behaviour on your site. They serve different purposes — Semrush for competitive intelligence, GA4 for understanding your own audience and conversions.

Does Semrush have an API?

Yes. Semrush offers API access on most paid plans, with endpoints for domain analytics, keyword research, backlinks, and position tracking. This is useful for agencies building custom dashboards or integrating SEO data into client reporting systems.
